Change & Choices:
Change
One of the biggest issues in life is the issue of change. What’s the goal? Certainly, any time you encounter someone, the goal is to have a demonstrable change, something that moves you from this point to this point—maybe goals that you’ve mutually agreed on or something you’ve set out to do. Regardless, whether you’re coaching, mentoring, counseling, what have you, that is the goal.
One of the things I’ve found very challenging through the years is simply the word “discontentment.” A lot of people have discontent. I try to stir up a lot of discontent, because if you know it’s not the way it’s supposed to be, if you know that something needs to change, that’s not necessarily a bad place to be. At least you’re not living in denial. At least you’re—what?—at least you’re stirred. Discontent can be the mother of invention. Discontent, that frustration, isn’t something that you should be afraid of. If anything, you might even want to cultivate a little bit of that, hopefully nudging people in a direction.
Choices
Life truly is all about choices, though. We make choices every day. You’ve chosen, today, how you’re going to live your day. A strong verse in Scripture, Josh 24:15, simply says this: “Choose you this day whom you’re going to serve,” and Joshua’s response to it was, “As for me and my house, we’re going to serve the Lord.” We’re going to serve Him faithfully. That’s what we’re going to do.
